How to save money on shopping

Today, I wanted to share with you my best tips to save money while shopping. I know that it might sounds a bit confusing but as you’ll quickly realise, just a few of these tips can save you quite a bit of money in the long run!

Why cashback is pretty amazing

If you’ve never heard about cashback before, I’m about to blow your mind! I’ve started using a cashback extension in my web browser a few years ago and I’ve been able to get hundreds of euros back from my online orders. I use iGraal, one of the biggest platforms, as I find that they have the best selection of brands and retailers when it comes to fashion, beauty, travel, home decor, or tech.

The idea is really simple: for each purchase on one of their partner’s website, iGraal gives me a small amount of money back. For example, each time I order from Asos, H&M or Vestiaire Collective, I get a (small) percentage back from what I’ve spent. It also works for travel reservations on some websites such as Hotels.com, Booking or Eurostar.

I’ve added the Google Chrome extension directly into my browser, which means that each time I am on one of their partners website, I get a small banner on top to encourage me to turn on my cashback. Furthermore, it also shows me all the current promo codes that are available. After a few months, you’ll quickly see your balance going up, up, up and you can ask to get your money either through a bank deposit, PayPal or even as a gift card!

Use promo codes

Before ordering anything online, I always check for promo codes. Most times than not, there are a few floating around on the retailer’s social media or website that will get you a small percentage off or free shipping. But if you’re looking for a quicker and easier way to find those, I highly recommend using a coupon website! I personally use Retail Me Not but also iGraal or Shoptagr (more about it below).

Newsletters

To tell you the truth, I hate having my inbox filled with newsletters but I have to admit that sometimes, you can get pretty amazing deals in them! It’s especially great if you’re looking to buy a specific piece or if you like one retailer in particular. Really often, you’ll get a promo code to use on your first order but, most importantly, you’ll be the first to know when good deals are added! It’s how I got nearly 150€ off my brand new Valentino bag. If you don’t want to have your inbox filled with promotional emails, I would suggest either using tabs in your inbox (like in Gmail) or create another email address just to sign up for newsletters (but don’t forget to regularly delete emails that you don’t longer need!)

Compare prices

Of course, before buying anything new, it’s always a good idea to compare prices. I mainly use this method when I’m buying something from a luxury brand (like something from Gucci or Saint Laurent) that is sold on multiple platforms. It takes a bit of time but honestly, you’ll be amazed at some of the differences that you’ll find! For all my home decor and tech shopping, I use another browser extension called Shoptimate. It doesn’t work on all websites but it’s really useful if you’re looking into getting a new camera, a travel steamer or an expensive hairdryer!

Follow price drops

And since we’re talking about extensions, let me tell you about Shoptagr. This nifty little extension lets you add items to your wishlist to be alerted whenever there’s a price change! You can also be notified when an item that you love is back in stock and it’s also a great way to create curated wish lists. It works on almost all of my favorite retailers, including Asos, Revolve, Mytheresa or H&M.

Get a credit card with advantages

Some credit cards companies give you some pretty good advantages whenever you make a purchase. I personally use my American Express card a lot because, for every euro that I spend, I get reward points that I can exchange for products, gift cards or even donate to my favorite charities. The secret here is to use your card as much as you can (as long as you stay within your budget obviously!). I use mine to pay for clothes & travel expenses but I also use it for groceries or gas! The more you use it, the more you can earn rewards!
