There’s nothing that beats the feeling of coming back to your place and being welcomed by this ‘home’ smell. Just like the smell of a hot cup of coffee in the morning or the smell of fresh laundry, I love my home to smell special and very cosy. Therefore, it’s no surprise that I have candles in every single room of our apartment, much to my boyfriend despair!
I love lighting a candle in the evening while we watch a movie and sip on a glass of wine. It instantly creates a intimate vibe while filling the room with a delicious smell. Through the years, I’ve tried many many candles and learned a lot about it. Yup, that’s right, there’s actually a proper way to use them to get the most of it and a handful of tips to avoid any issues! Here are a few tips and tricks to enjoy your candles to the fullest!
My first tip is an obvious one, but always be careful when you light up a candle. Make sure that it sits on a flat surface, isn’t too close to any easy flammable objects and light it with a match or a candle lighter. One of the key to have even burned candles is to let them lit for at least two hours. You basically want the whole surface of the candle to be liquid before blowing it out. This way, your candle will burn evenly and will last longer!
Try samples and discover new brands. While I love the Ikea candles, I sometimes crave something a bit more sophisticated. But buying great quality candles can easily become an expensive habit, so make sure to pick the right brand and the right scent for you! Look out for votives, miniatures and travel sized candles to sample a few or simply to use for a limited time. I personally love Yankee Candle & White Barn for seasonal smells and Laura Mercier to give away to friends.
Mix and match your scents and don’t be afraid to burn more than one candle at a time! I love mixing scents together to create something totally unique. My current favorite is Dyptique ‘ambre’ mixed with Muji ‘log fire’ as it creates a smoky but sultry scent, perfect for the winter!
Buy a few accessories. A proper lighter or a wick trimmer are small purchases but I guarantee that they will come in very helpful! It’s important to always trim your wicks before burning a candle to avoid any fire hazard and dirty black marks on the jars.
Reuse & repurpose your old jars. I love to reuse them for completely new purposes. For example, these two Dyptique ones hold my makeup and nails essentials but will also be great as a desk accessory to keep all your pens together or even as a small planter! There are a few videos on Youtube that show you how to get all of the wax out of the jar but I personally use a method that works very well. I first put my old candle in the freezer for couple of hours. After that, I carefully and slowly remove all the wax that is left behind with a spoon and roughly clean it with a tissue paper. When all the wax is gone, I wash it with hot water and dish soap. The main thing to remember here is to never put wax in your sink as it will completely clog it!
Here you go, these are all my tips! I hope you enjoyed them and hopefully learned a thing or two!
